The panel displays different sets of properties depending on what bones are currently selected and visible.<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21858\" style=\"width: 173px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21858\" class=\"wp-image-21858 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_01.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_01\" width=\"163\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21858\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The IK Bones for the arm are visible and enabled.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">However, you can force the Panel to always <em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">show all controls<\/span> <\/em>regardless which bones are selected by checking the tick box at the top of the panel (see image).[break]\nYou can unhide (display) the yellow IK Control bones by clicking on the Buttons <em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">IK Arms<\/span><\/em> and <em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">IK Legs<\/span><\/em>. And you can activate the IK Control Bones by ticking on the empty square right to the Buttons (See image)<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Note:<\/span><\/strong> When you see a green tick right to a button (see image above), then the corresponding IK bones are enabled. However Avastar displays the corresponding bone properties only when you have also selected the IK Bones in the Viewport.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Chain Controls (Targetless IK)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h4>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<p>The Chain controls are only available for the (green) control bones except: the EyeTarget, The COG Bone and the Origin.[break]\n<p>The Avastar bones are organized in parent\/child chains. These chains are used for targetless IK. That is when you grab one bone along a chain, all bones of the chain follow along the movement of the active bone. For example when you move a wrist or an ankle, the entire arm\/leg will be repositioned in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21870\" style=\"width: 172px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21870\" class=\"wp-image-21870 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_02.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_02\" width=\"162\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Chain Control is only shown when the active and selected bone is a green control Bone.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Once you understand how these controls work you will find that positioning a character becomes very fast and easy.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">The Chain ends<\/span><\/h4>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">In the top row of the Chain controls subpanel you see the Chain end points for the active (selected)bone. The left entry is the chain start bone, which is always the active Bone. The right entry is the end of the kinematic chain. [break]\nBelow the Chain display you find 5 control Buttons which allow you to quickly modify the end of the Chain:<\/div>\n<div class=\"rhcol span6\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_031.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21908\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_031.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_03\" width=\"162\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Parent<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The chain begins at the current bone and ends at the Bone&#8217;s parent. This is the smallest possible IK Chain (contains only one bone).<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">COG (Center Of Gravity)<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>All kinematic chains end at the COG Bone, So the COG Bone will always be the most distant bone that you can choose.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Limb<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The chain start at the current bone and ends at the last limb bone. These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Hips (for the leg chains)<\/li>\n<li>The Collars (for the arm chains)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Less &amp; More<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>With these Buttons you can elongate the Bone chain until the chain end reaches the COG Bone, or you can shrink it until the chain end is the parent of the active and selected bone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Note:<\/span><\/strong> Each bone has its own targetless IK Chain. So it is possible for example to configure the Wrist bone&#8217;s chain to reach up to the COG Bone, while the Collar Bone&#8217;s chain already ends at the Torso.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">The Chain Tip Movement:<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The second set of buttons affects how the selected bone behaves when it is moved in Pose mode. In the example below i have moved the Avastar&#8217;s mNeck Bone along the X-Axis to demonstrate the difference between Clamped and Free Bone Tip Movement:<\/p>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21911\" style=\"width: 273px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21911\" class=\"wp-image-21911 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_05.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_05\" width=\"263\" height=\"189\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clamped: Bone orientation does not change while bone is moved<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Clamped:<\/span><\/strong> the chain tip can be moved but won&#8217;t be rotated. It will keep its orientation in space as it&#8217;s dragged around.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21912\" style=\"width: 273px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21912\" class=\"wp-image-21912 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_04.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_04\" width=\"263\" height=\"189\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21912\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Free: Bone Orientation is controlled by the IK Resolver<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Free:<\/span><\/strong> the chain tip moves\/(rotated) freely with the movement of the bones<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Influence<\/span><\/h4>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">The Influence value specifies how much the bone actually modifies its IK chain when moved around. So a value of 0 effectively disables all influences of the bone movement to its IK chain, while a value of one give maximum influence. Normally you want to keep the influence at 1.0<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_06.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21917\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_06.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_06\" width=\"162\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>IK Targets<\/h3>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">Avastar provides 4 IK Target boness, 2 for the Arms and 2 for the legs. These bones are displayed in yellow. besides the target bones we also provide 4 Pole targets which can be used to adjust the knees and the elbows.[break]\nThe pole targets are connected to the skeleton via helper bones to visualize where they influence the Skeleton.<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_08.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21925\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_08.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_08\" width=\"242\" height=\"354\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>IK bone Controls<\/h3>\n<p>The 4 IK Control bones (yellow, see in the section about &#8220;Avatar bones&#8221;) can be used to clamp the limbs at fixed positions. We have 3 sliders for each limb plus 2 additional sliders for the Foot Pivot. I have enabled <em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Show all controls<\/span> <\/em>so we can see the control parameters without actually selecting the bones.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">IK\/FK influence: <\/span><\/h4>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"rhcol span6\">\n<p>The 4 top most sliders (Left Arm, Right Arm, Left Leg and Right Leg) define the amount of influence that is applied from the IK Control bones to the corresponding limbs.[break]\nBy default the IK influence is set to 0, that is: the bones are completely decoupled from the IK control bones and thus they behave solely as FK bones (FK==forward kinematics).[break]\nIf you move the sliders towards 1, then the current location of the IK bone controller gets more influence on where the tip of the corresponding bone chain is located. When set to 1, then the tip of the limb chain is fully clamped to the IK Control bone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_07.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21927\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_07.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_07\" width=\"169\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Note:<\/span><\/strong> You will use the IK Bones when you want the feet or arms to rest fixed at a location, while the rest of the body moves.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Foot Pivot<\/span><\/h4>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">When rotating a foot, you can define the pivot point around which the foot is rotated. Normally this is located at the heel, so that the foot itself goes up and down. The foot pivot sliders allow to adjust the point anywhere between the Heel and the Toe.<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21932 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_09.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_09\" width=\"169\" height=\"99\" \/><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Note:<\/span> <\/strong>Blender allows key-framing of sliders as well as of bones.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Target Align<\/h3>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">When you have selected one or more bones whcih belong to a bone chain, then an additional subpanel opens. The Target Align panel allows to set the IK Properties of the rig. By default the properties area is collapsed as shown in he image. We will describe the content of this area below in more detail.<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21955\" style=\"width: 171px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21955\" class=\"wp-image-21955 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_17.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_17\" width=\"161\" height=\"71\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Target Align Panel.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span>: Click on the Button <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><em>Align to Pose<\/em><\/span> to set all affected parameters at once (see next chapter for details)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Wrist &amp; Ankle Rotation<\/h3>\n<p>The targetless IK is a great way of posing a character. However, when you want to switch to targeted IK in the middle of your animation, then you will see a mismatch of the IK Control Bones to their corresponding Wrist or Ankle Bone.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21942\" style=\"width: 247px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21942\" class=\"wp-image-21942 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_12.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_12\" width=\"237\" height=\"359\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IK Controll Bones mismach<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21943\" style=\"width: 247px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21943\" class=\"wp-image-21943 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_13.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_13\" width=\"237\" height=\"359\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IK Control Bones match after apply the Match Operators.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>You can fix the IK Bone location easily in the IK system using the <em><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Target Align<\/span><\/em> subpanel:<\/p>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span6 rhcol\">\n<p>In the Target Align Panel you find up to 4 Match Buttons (depending on which of the IK Control Bones you have selected):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Match Left Wrist.<\/li>\n<li>Match Right Wrist.<\/li>\n<li>Match Left Ankle.<\/li>\n<li>Match Right Ankle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These Operators copy the current rotation and location of the corresponding wrist bone or ankle bone to its IK Controller.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rhcol span6\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21946\" style=\"width: 194px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_111.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21946\" class=\"wp-image-21946 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.machinimatrix.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/IK_controls_111.png\" alt=\"IK_controls_11\" width=\"184\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Target Align Buttons only appear when you have selected an IK Control Bone (yellow)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h1>Set Target<\/h1>\n<p>While you work with the IK Bones the target poles often get into weird positions.
